Introduction to the Sickle Cell Anaemia Clinic - Department of Clinical Hematology, Oncology, BMT, and Cellular Therapies at Raghav Health Care
We are pleased to announce Uttarakhand’s first dedicated Sickle Cell Anemia Clinic, established in Haldwani by Dr. Tushar Pandey and Dr. Raghav Pandey. This pioneering clinic, led by Dr. Tushar Pandey—the region’s first Clinical Hematologist practicing since 2020—serves as a specialized center for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of Sickle Cell Anemia and related blood disorders. The Sickle Cell Anemia Clinic aligns with the government’s mission to eliminate sickle cell anemia by 2047, striving to provide early diagnosis, effective treatment, and support for individuals affected by this genetic condition.
Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA) is an inherited blood disorder where red blood cells, which are normally round, become crescent or "sickle" shaped due to an abnormal form of hemoglobin. These sickle-shaped cells can block blood flow, leading to pain, anemia (a deficiency of healthy red blood cells), and increased risk of infection. Some individuals carry only the "Sickle Cell Trait," meaning they carry one copy of the gene but do not exhibit severe symptoms. In contrast, those with Sickle Cell Anemia have two copies of the gene and experience the full effects of the disorder.
Dr. Tushar Pandey’s expertise in managing Sickle Cell Anemia, related hemoglobinopathies, and his knowledge in genetic assessment and counselling provide critical support to patients and families, helping them understand their condition and options. With ongoing research to bring international treatment models to the clinic, Dr. Pandey ensures that the highest standards are met in patient care. The clinic’s comprehensive approach is dedicated to improving the lives of those impacted by Sickle Cell Anemia in Uttarakhand, advancing toward the goal of a sickle cell-free India by 2047 as highlighted by the honourable Prime Minister of India.
